Jeffers scores maiden USF2000 victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Exclusive Autosport took to the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a doubleheader on the track’s 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course this past weekend (May 8-10) and came away a win, four podiums and the lead in both the Driver and Team Championship standings in USF2000. Texan rookie Jack Jeffer, began the event with his first career victory in the USF2000 Presented by Continental Tire Championship and backed that up on Saturday with a third-place result to take a two-point series championship lead into the Freedom 75 Carb Night Classic event on May 23 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. Jeffers’ USF2000 teammates Lucas Fecury and Evan Cooley helped add to EA’s overall total in the Team Championship, putting the team P1 in both the Driver and Team standings after three events.

“It was great to be back at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway this past weekend,” said Michael Duncalfe, Co-Owner and CEO. “Our cars were very quick all weekend and it was great to see Jack capture his first win of the season (and first in the USF2000 category) along with a third-place finish. Evan (Cooley)unfortunately had some bad luck this past weekend. We are confident he will rebound at our next outing at the oval. We battled an electrical issue with Lucas (Fecury) for part of the weekend. He put together an absolutely incredible drive from the tail of the field up to sixth in Race 2 and it was heartbreaking for the issue to reappear with only a few corners to go on the final lap of the race, ultimately costing him the finish he so very much deserved. All in all, it was a positive weekend as we took over the points lead in both the driver and team championship standings. As a team, we have very positive momentum on our side and we are looking for the drivers to carry that forward into the Freedom 75 next week.”

The weekend kicked off on Thursday with two unofficial tests and finished with their one and only official practice session. All three drivers showed great pace throughout the sessions and looked to qualify well for Races 1 and 2. Early Friday morning, the drivers jumped right into qualifying in temperatures much cooler than they had experienced the previous day. While Jeffers flirted with the pole for Race 1 during the session, he would have to settle for third at the end of the 20-minute session. Cooley grabbed the seventh spot while Fecury was hit with a technical issue that hampered his pace and put him in 20th, setting up impressive drives forward in both races.

The opening race of the doubleheader took place later in the afternoon and Jeffers immediately went on the attack, coming out of the Turn 1 scrum in second. Just a couple of turns later, he took over the lead in the Turn 7-8-9 complex. Although there was one yellow flag that slowed the pace and restacked the field, Jack handled the restart well and went on to dominate the entire race, winning by 2.44 seconds. Both Cooley and Fecury fought hard throughout the race and were in the middle of exciting battles, finishing 11th and 17th, respectively.

The final race of the weekend took place mid-morning on Saturday. Overall, it was a chaotic race with all three drivers battling for every position they could get. Jeffers and Cooley consistently fought with the front group, and while Jack would finish in the third position. Unfortunately, Evan went off track in Turn 1 with five laps remaining and made contact with another driver that forced an early retirement. Fecury did not have the starting position he would have liked, but he was one of the stars of the race. Lucas put on an absolute clinic on his way up the order, fighting his way from the 18th position all the way up to sixth over the final laps before a technical issue dropped him to 14th on the final lap. Lucas showed his strong pace and determination over the weekend and gave everyone a look at what is to come for the rest of the season.

The team leaves the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course not only in the driver championship lead, but also in the team championship lead. The EA squad will now head to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the official Series Test this week, before returning to Indianapolis for the Carb Night Classic on May 22-23 with the USF2000 and USF Pro 2000 series.
